Phillip Finder

Phillip Finder is an emerging artist working in St. Louis, MO. Clay is his primary medium, but often combines his clay work with media such as metals, concrete and wood. He earned a M.F.A. in ceramics from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in 2013 where he was the recipient of the Carey Orness Sculpture Award and the Martha Holden Graduate award. Phillip holds a B.F.A from the University of North Florida. Currently, Phillip teaches ceramics at St. Louis Community College Forest Park, Maryville University, and Krueger Pottery Supply. In addition to teaching, Phillip works at a home studio in South St. Louis City. His work has received recognition both locally and nationally, and has recently been featured by Barcelona based architecture and design group, MDBA.
Phillip uses a variety of processes to achieve his finished work. Much of the work is fired without glaze in an oxidized kiln atmosphere to cone 6. Many of the surfaces fired in this atmosphere are layered slips. Some of Phillip’s work is also fired to high temperature in the gas reduction kiln. Generally, his colored glazed work utilizes this firing process. In addition to the clay work, Phillip often combines other media such as wood, steel and pigmented concrete. For these reasons, his workshop is a multi-media friendly workspace.
