Brent Mead is a Mason City, IA native and currently is working on his Master’s degree in trombone performance at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory where he plays in the UMKC Graduate Fellowship Brass Quintet, Volker Brass. Brent is also the principal trombone of the Wichita Symphony. Brent earned his Bachelors of Music Education at the University of Northern Iowa in May 2017. During his five years at UNI, Brent played trombone in the UNI Wind Symphony, UNI Jazz Band I, Northern Iowa Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Band II, Panther Marching Band, UNI Jazz Slides, Landmark Brass Quintet, the UNI trombone quartet, The Down Low Trombone Quartet and trombone choir at UNI. He has also performed with the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Coalition Big Band in Mason City, IA, Mason City Municipal Band, Waterloo Municipal Band, Bill Shepherd Big Band, and the Don’t Quit Your Day Job Big Band in New Hampton, IA. Professional Affiliations include Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Pi Kappa Lambda, and the International Trombone Association. Brent’s primary teachers include Dr. JoDee Davis, Dr. Anthony Williams, and Dr. Chris Buckholz. Brent has studied with and performed in masterclasses with world class trombonists including Tony Baker, Scott Bean, Luis Bonilla, Pete Ellefson, Scott Hartman, Randy Hawes, Carl Lenthe, Jim Miller, Michael Mulcahy, Roger Oyster, and Weston Sprott in addition to the Corpus Trombone Quartet and Trombones de Costa Rica.
Teaching has been a passion for Brent for many years. Brent taught at the UNI Community Music School for four years and currently is a trombone instructor in the Kansas City metropolitan area. His students have consistently placed in top ensembles at school in addition to making regional and all-state bands. Brent was recognized as the 2016 UNI Wind Symphony Outstanding Musician. He was also a finalist in the 2016 UNI Wind Symphony Solo Competition, a finalist in the 2015 UNI Presser Scholarship Competition and the Audience Favorite award winner of the 2014 University of Northern Iowa Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition. In the summer of 2016, Brent attended the Rafael Mendez Brass Institute on full scholarship. Brent plays Antoine Courtois Paris Trombones and Griego mouthpieces.
