Rex Wheeler

Originally from London, Rex received his training at the Royal Ballet School and Elmhurst School for Dance. As a student Rex performed with Birmingham Royal Ballet and on several occasions for the Royal Family. Mr. Wheeler joined Slovak National Ballet in 2009 followed by Sacramento Ballet in 2010 where he choreographed many new works for the company and for the School of Sacramento Ballet. In 2015 Rex joined Smuin Contemporary Ballet where he created many new works for the company choreographic workshop which lead the commission of ‘Sinfonietta’ for the company main stage Dance Series One program in the fall of 2018 and to several new works included in Michael Smuin’s ‘The Christmas Ballet. Rex was selected to participate as one of the three chosen choreographers in the 2016 New York Choreographic Institute, an Institute founded by Peter Martins, ballet master in chief of the New York City Ballet. It was at the 2016 Spring sessions that his collaboration with composer Jared Miller on a new work gave birth to ‘Echo Syncopations’. As a founding member of Capital Dance Project, he created four new works for the ‘Behind the Barre’ performances consecutively from 2015- present where he has collaborated with painters, composers, visual artists such as Raphael Delgado, Andy Tan, Melissa and Melinda Arendt to name a few. Rex was commissioned to choreograph ‘French Horn Rebellion’s music video ‘Swing into It’ in 2014 and was selected to dance in the National Choreographer’s Initiative for three consecutive years. As a resident of San Francisco, CA Rex continues his work in choreography and teaching within California and across the country as well as dancing freelance and performing as a drag queen in the city.
