There have been many travels and experiences that have led me to become a photographer in San Diego. Specializing in Destination Weddings, I get to travel all over the world shooting weddings but also have the good fortune of shooting in beautiful Southern California most often. I am extremely passionate about my work. I love that I have a part in the begining of a family and get to document such an important day in a family’s life. Great, great grandchildern will look back fondly at the photographes that I took at their great, great grandparents wedding and say “look how in love great, great grandma and great great grandpa were” I simply love what I do.
I grew up in the Bay Area of Northern California, at that point it was yet to be the center of the world. There were rolling green hills, farms and orchards. It was very peaceful. What a great place to grow up. I was born in San Jose, California, The baby of six, and was practically raised in my parents photography studio. So as the child of professional photographers, I have had a camera in my hands ever since I could walk. I was always the one taking photos at school, at parties and on annual surf trips to Mexico with myfriends. I love the memories that I have been able to capture throughout my life and noe photography is simply my passion.
I spent many years traveling the world, bartending and surfing, all the while shooting photos. The transition from professional bartending at beautiful locales like the top of squaw Valley Ski Resort in Lake Tahoe, Waikki Beach and the pubs of Newquay UK (Britains surfing capital) to professional photography has been smooth. In both professions creativity, people skills, and multi tasking are key.
I called Santa Cruz home for almost 20 years and it was my base for my world travels. As a local SC surfer I became friends with many local pro surfers. I wanted to make a living within the culture so I Started filming my friends whenever I was’t surfing myself. Filming surf in Santa Cruz amazing but travel was my goal so I began to follow the professional surfing tour withy myu friends, shooting all the way. My fillmmaking and photography has taken me throughout Europe, South Pacific, and of course North America. My surfing and snowboarding films produced in the late 90’s were received well and “Nuthin But nuts”, my second film, was nominated for a Surfer Magazine Video Award. I followed up my own films with footage in many movies made by action sport companies Hurley and Onell.
I fell the urge to get back to shooting more still photography and while attending the Los Angeles campus of the New York Film Academy I began to photograph anything and everything. My time at the NYFA was great. It was a very hands on learning experience. We wrote, shot and edited all of our own films. We also shot our films on Arriflex 16 mm cameras and edited on Steenbeck flatbed editing machines. Real “Old School” shooting film not video and editing film, cut and splice style no computers. Super cool as I had already learned the ins and outs of cideo tape and computer editing prior to my attendance at the NYFA. When friends asked me to photograph their wedding in 2002 I went for it. It was a blast! And the phots came out great! Thanks Katie and stan.
I opened my photography studio in 2007, in the heart of beautiful Old Town, San Diego. To date I have photographed over 200 weddings and about 600 family portraiture sessions. I am so happy to practice my passion of photography in sunny, wave rich San Diego and look forward to doing it for many years to come.
