When I was in 5th grade, I heard the 6th grade band give a concert at my elementary school in Denton, TX. I was hooked and decided right then that I was going to join the band and play the flute. My parents were hesitant about spending the money, especially on an art professor’s salary with 6 kids. They believed in me, and I worked hard each day practicing.
My brother reminded me of a story that took place on our long move from Denton, Texas to Utah. He recalls me kneeling on the seat of our moving van, putting my music on the dashboard, and telling him, “I can’t miss a day of practicing.” I continue to Jeannine Goeckeritzpractice my flute and to work hard. In return, I am blessed to be able to give back to the world in a way that would not have been possible had I not been inspired by a band made up of 6th graders and been supported by parents that believed in their young daughter. I continue to have the great fortune of being surrounded by family, friends and colleagues that believe in me and support me in finding my dreams.
