Skylar’s first experience with the piano began at the age of 4, when she sat in front of the piano in her Sacramento home. Who would have known that initial spark of fascination with pounding the keys would open the way to the music-enriched life that Skylar cherishes?
At about the age of seven, she discovered a gift for picking up and playing songs by ear. At eight, she began training privately and started to perform. Since then she has studied a variety of music, including rock, jazz and classical. All of these styles have influenced her song writing, which began at the age of twelve. At age fifteen, Skylar also was featured as the first Major Minor in the February 2010 issue of Keyboard Magazine.
In the summer of 2010, Skylar has started the Skylar Thomas Band, performing classic rock and pop music. Skylar routinely performs solo classical recitals and has played live several times with The Frank Hannon Band (the guitarist of Tesla), Jeff Watson (the guitarist from Night Ranger), Izzy Ozborne (a tribute to Ozzy Osbourne), and The Lenny Dean band. Before that, Skylar played in her first original rock band, Ember, at age 12 as the youngest member, and followed up as a member of the band, Aldershot. In 2008, Aldershot won third place in Skip’s Music Stairway to Stardom rock band competition. Music is a natural way of expression for Skylar. It’s probably most apparent when she performs, although she is grateful to combine that with a solid grounding in the classical music tradition when she plays and composes. In the future, Skylar plans to go to a music college like Juilliard, Manhattan School of Music, or Berklee College of Music.
There are always a few musical goals on Skylar’s ‘to do’ list, including one day being part of writing music for film, collaborating in performing or writing with a famous vocalist, or performing in an established band. Skylar likes her music to benefit others, and wishes to follow in the footsteps of those musicians who contribute to good causes.
