My name is Melissa, and I’m the owner and principle artist at M.A.W.Beauty Hair & Makeup Studio. I love Jesus, the color pink, I’m obsessed with eyebrows, I love my chihuahua, and even though I’m a hair and makeup artist – I’m still a regular girl who does not have her hair and makeup done every day. Truth be told, in my youth, I experienced so many bad beauty services – from having my hair and scalp burned with chemical relaxers, to a bad waxing experience leaving me with burned eyebrows and damaged hair follicles, to having a nail removed as a result of an unclean service from a nail tech. These situations were major motivators in my decision to get my cosmetology license in 2004. During my years of training, I worked my way up the ranks, starting as an assistant in one of Rhode Island’s top ethnic salons and eventually becoming a stylist. I’ve worked in many areas of beauty – from behind the chair in independent and corporate salons, behind the makeup counter for Clinique, to beauty retail for consumers and professionals, as well as freelance artistry – leading me to open M.A.W.Beauty Hair & Makeup Studio. In addition to my beauty training, I also earned a Certificate in Marketing from CCRI in 2008. In 2009, I became an Independent Consultant with Arbonne International, a 38 year old beauty and wellness company, and began my transition into entrepreneurship. In 2011, I opened M.A.W.Beauty with 2 simple goals in mind: to provide brides and clients with an unforgettable luxury beauty experience for one of the biggest days of their lives, or for everyday beauty services, and to create a team of the best professionally licensed artists that I could find to provide these services. Realizing that there was no on-location bridal beauty team that could truly cater to all hair textures and skin tones, I decided to put my passion for hair, makeup and business together to create M.A.W.Beauty Hair & Makeup Studio. Since our inception, my team and I have been blessed with the opportunity to service many brides and their bridal parties, and I have personally had the pleasure of travelling internationally to create the perfect bridal beauty experience for destination weddings. I have also styled makeup for Style Week Northeast, Boston Fashion Week, and I provide beauty services for a number of professional photo shoots. In addition to bridal and photography work, I still enjoy taking everyday clients for services such as blowouts, wash and sets, haircuts, conditioning treatments, and makeup services. M.A.W.Beauty Hair & Makeup Studio has been voted “Best of Weddings” by The Knot 2013 – 2018, and and also received the “Bride’s Choice Award” from Wedding Wire in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2017. My work has been featured in publications such as Well Wed Magazine and Southern New England Weddings Magazine, and can also be seen on several blogs. I have also had the humbling experience of mentoring students from the MET School in Providence who aspire to enter the beauty industry upon graduation. One of my proudest moments in my career so far was providing hair and makeup for Senator Bernie Sanders during the 2016 Presidential Election. I’m constantly working hard and pushing myself to stay current on what’s new and next in the beauty industry. I love expanding my skill and knowledge through regular classes, workshops, seminars, and trade shows, and by learning from some of the industry’s top names.
