Allison FrazierAllison Frazier is a Portland area flutist with over 25 years of experience as a musician and teacher. An Oregon resident since 2010, she is a freelance musician, private teacher, and student. A recipient of the Knight scholarship, Allison attends Marylhurst University, where she is pursuing her certification in music therapy. She has also been studying jazz since the fall of 2015 with accomplished musician and composer, Willie Matheis. Allison teaches flute and recorder at Portland Metro Arts. In addition, she performs with Oregon Sinfonietta and the Clark College Orchestra, performed with the Oregon Mahler Festival Orchestra in 2016 and 2017, and appears periodically with the Rose City Flute Choir. Allison and her duet partner, Andrew Heriot, are available to perform various classical selections for flute and piano.
Raised on the Texas prairie in the small town of Sealy, Allison received her first private lessons from her band director, Mike Norris. She went on to study with Dr. Adah Toland Jones at Texas State University San Marcos, where she received her Bachelor of Music and Texas teaching certificate. Fueled by the desire to pursue ethnomusicology, Allison continued her studies at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. While earning her Master of Music at UL, she studied flute with Dr. Andrea Kapell Loewy and completed aAllison Frazier master’s thesis and graduate assistantship. Her interest in music therapy developed from research conducted for one of her graduate courses.
Allison currently volunteers for Housecall Providers, a non-profit organization which brings both palliative and hospice care to patients’ homes. The volunteer coordinators created a music program inspired by the movie “Alive Inside”. Although Allison was brought into this program for her knowledge of classical music, she performs a variety of tasks to increase the quality of life for hospice patients with music. She plans to continue her volunteer work in conjunction with her studies, using her knowledge enhance her output and help the program grow.
