Joan Benefiel’s sculpture blurs the line between traditional realism and the abstracted figure. At times, she is completely immersed in one genre or the other, but most often, it is a unique combination of the two. Joan is inspired by the spark of magic that happens when the expressive power of the human form meets her favorite mediums of bronze and translucent resin. Her monumental works have been commissioned for a variety of public art installations and her signature resin figures and studies are included in numerous private collections. Joan received her first monumental public art commission in 2004. Primarily self-taught up to that point, she was accepted to the MFA program for figurative sculpture at the New York Academy of Art that same year. Rounding out her formal sculpture training with more than a decade of working in bronze art foundries, Joan founded her own sculpture production company, Figuration Studio, in 2008. Born and raised in Kansas, she lives and works in Brooklyn’s artist enclave of Bushwick in New York City.
