Max Dyer


Max Dyer plays cello in every context from opera to folk, jazz, gospel and East/West improvisation. Cellist with the Houston Ballet for over 30 years, Max is also a veteran recording artist featured on dozens of projects for major and independent labels. A founding member of Jacqui Sutton’s Frontier Jazz Orchestra, Max performs frequently with the band in Houston, New Orleans and the San Francisco Bay area. He has appeared with the world music group Cantiga at Renaissance festivals since the early 90’s and has produced nine CD’s for the band. He enjoys creating East/West fusion improvisations with renowned Indian Classical singer Nanda Banerjee and world champion hammered dulcimer player Joshua Messick. Each winter, Max joins forces with acclaimed contemplative pianist/composer Dana Cunningham for a series of Christmas concerts in New England. In 2017, Max released his first solo album “Inspired: Max Dyer and Friends.”
For almost a decade, Max lived on the Isle of Cumbrae in Scotland as a member of the Community of Celebration. He raised goats and chickens, drove the bakery van and was assistant choir director at the Cathedral of the Isles. Max toured widely in Great Britain with the Fisherfolk, performing at churches and cathedrals, at the Royal Albert Hall and the Edinburgh Festival. He led music workshops at King’s College Cambridge and at Oxford University.
Max holds a Masters degree from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music and is married to cellist and author Cornelia Watkins. They recently moved from Houston to Madison Wisconsin.
