Austine Wood Comarow

Austine Wood Comarow grew up in postwar Europe where her father directed the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, which won the Nobel Peace Prize under his leadership. Having lived abroad for many years, she speaks five languages fluently. After attending Swarthmore College, she obtained a B.A. in Russian Language and Literature at the University of Indiana, and later earned an M.F.A. in illustration from Syracuse University.
At a crucial point in her artistic development, she discovered that certain transparent materials produce colors when they are illuminated with polarized light and are viewed through polarizing filters. Most of her work since then has been devoted to controlling this phenomenon and creating an entirely new artistic medium. Austine is also an accomplished painter. Known professionally as Austine, her work is held in private, corporate and museum collections worldwide. James Mann wrote a book about Austine’s life and work entitled “Austine Wood Comarow: Paintings in Polarized Light”.
Austine’s sudden passing in 2020 was devastating for her family, friends and collectors all around the world. Her daughter Cara Ginder — who was at first her art assistant and ultimately her close artistic collaborator for over 30 years — had begun taking the reins at the studio over the past few years. Cara is an accomplished fine artist in her own right. Her paintings have shown in prestigious New York City galleries and her murals adorn museums, libraries and schools including the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, CT and the Museum of Science and Industry in Tampa, FL. Cara now leads the crew at Austine Studios into the future, creating new individual Polage artworks and public art projects along with Austine’s husband and longtime collaborator David Comarow and Austine’s other daughter, writer and artist Erika Wood.
