Amirah Fusion

Amirah FusionAmirah began her dance journey at the age of 3 and has passionately explored the art form ever since. As a competitive gymnast for 10 years, she extensively studied ballet, modern dance, and hip hop. She continued modern dance while at college, studying under Hilary McDaniels-Douglas. It was at this community center she heard the jingling of hipscarves for the first time. In 2002, Amirah began studying belly dance under Shuvani of Oasis Belly Dancers. From there, she and fellow students went on to co-found Mirage Bellydancers, a Purdue University Official Student Organization, in 2004. It was here that Amirah developed her own style and technique.
While she mostly performs fusion, Amirah enjoys studying and performing all styles of belly dance. Her personal style is a fusion of modern dance, popping, and waving, with tribal and cabaret stylizations. As an instructor, Amirah focuses on technique and muscle control as a foundation forAmirah Fusion interpretation of music. She concentrates on teaching her students concepts which they can apply many different ways to help inspire them to be creative and hone in on their own style. Amirah was the head instructor and creative director of Mirage Bellydancers from 2005 – 2011. She has also taught workshops all over the Midwest, including at Zafira’s dance studios in Pittsburg, and as a featured instructor for festivals such as Qiana ( in Akron, OH, Gothalyptic in Louisville, KY, and Midwest Tribal Mafia ( in Chicago.
Amirah FusionAmirah is also quite passionate about playing music. She has been a member of Indy’s 16th century rock band, Il Troubadore since 2007, with whom she dances and plays Middle Eastern clarinet, dumbek, and riq ( Amirah is also a member of the Nomads of Bend, Or. She has had the opportunity to perform with musicians such as Jeremiah Soto (Solace), August Hoerr (the Mezmer Society), Americanistan, Brett Zwerdling (Maharal), Melissa Murphey and Ishtar, and many others. Amirah relocated from the midwest in 2011 and is currently living in Bend, OR. She is inspired by the community of dancers here and excited to be a part of it!
