Elizabeth Frey, American mezzo-soprano, is quickly establishing a reputation for her warm, shimmering voice, and engaging stage presence. The versatility of the mezzo voice type is evidenced by her colorful resume, which demonstrates a diverse range of characters, and operatic styles. Ms. Frey recently performed with the Utah Festival Opera where she performed the role of Edith in Pirates of Penzance, and covered Suzuki in Madame Butterfly and the alto solo of the Verdi Requiem. She was recently an Artist in Residence with Dayton Opera where she performed the role of Mercedes in Bizet’s Carmen, as well as covered the title role. She has performed with the Des Moines Metro Opera, The Cleveland Opera, Cleveland Opera Theatre, Opera Western Reserve, Lorain Opera Theatre, and the Maryland Opera Society.
Ms. Frey attended the Cleveland Institute of Music, earning a Masters in Vocal Performance. With the Cleveland Institute of Music Opera Theater, Ms. Frey performed the roles of Sesto in Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito, Ruggiero in Händel’s Alcina, Dido in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, and Hänsel in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel. She also appeared as the wicked stepmother in Massenet’s Cendrillon, the jilted brother, Arsamene, in Handel’s Xerxes, and the nymph Dryad in Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos. Ms Frey studied Music and Anthropology at the University of California, Davis. She received the UC. Davis vocal excellence award. Last year, she was awarded the prestigious Boris Goldovsky Prize in Opera.
