Michelle
Michelle graduated from Drake University with a BFA in Painting and a BA in Psychology in 2004. She moved to Chicago immediately after graduation with zero life plans. In 2005, while managing a local boutique, she started making jewelry and selling it at the shop. Two years later she was featured in Lucky Magazine as a standout local designer. Later that year she started working at an art supply store which is where she met Steve. In 2009 she began working at Lillstreet Art Center.
It was this job that allowed her to save money to invest in her business and spend time growing it before taking the leap to full time self employment in 2014. After moving out of her shared studio in 2016, she now works from home in a 60 square foot sunroom. Her idea of a perfect day would be going to the farmer’s market, then making jewelry while watching British crime dramas without being interrupted for the rest of the day.
Steve
Steve received a BFA in Painting from Southern Illinois University in 2000, and a MFA in Studio Art from the University of Maryland in 2006. He moved to Chicago immediately after graduate school because he missed the midwest. His first few years were spent painting in raw studio spaces on Lake Street, and working in an art supply store downtown. In 2009 Steve began working as a Teaching Artist at Lillstreet Art Center, where he taught classes on painting, drawing, screen-printing, and digital art until 2013. Michelle Starbuck
In 2012 he began working at Marwen as an administrator in their Studio Programs department, and helped guide the center through their building expansion in 2015. In 2016 he began working as the Youth Arts Program Director at the Chicago Center for Arts and Technology, a start-up art center on the west side. He began saving money in early 2017 and recently resigned from this job to join Michelle in running this business.
His idea of a perfect day would be going on a long walk first thing in the morning, returning home to drink copious amounts of coffee and spend a few hours listening to music and painting, before watching the Bears destroy the Packers. After that, reading for an hour or two and then heading to bed.
