Kaminer Haislip

Originally from Aiken, South Carolina, I grew up in my family’s hardware and appliance business. This experience directly influenced my interest in creating three-dimensional objects and lead me on the path to becoming a silversmith. During high school I became enthusiastic about sculpture and jewelry, so I took the industrial tech class and learned to weld. After high school graduation I attended Winthrop University and in 2002 received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Jewelry and Metals. Immediately after I moved to Charlotte, North Carolina and began my studies for my Master of Fine Arts degree also at Winthrop University. Correspondingly, while earning my MFA, I interned at the Mint Museum of Craft + Design, taught Jewelry II and III classes as well as numerous jewelry workshops at Winthrop University. For both of my degrees I studied under Alfred Ward, an internationally acclaimed English silversmith from London. After graduating in 2005 with a MFA in Silversmithing and Design and a Minor in Sculpture, I moved to Charleston, South Carolina and started my business. I design and create all of my original, handcrafted designs in my Charleston studio. In addition to my work as an artist, I am frequently commissioned by individuals to create unique silver and gold pieces.
My work has been exhibited internationally in The Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany and nationally in New York City, Chicago, Palm Beach, Philadelphia, Baltimore, South Carolina, North Carolina, Arizona, Texas, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Jersey, Ohio, Tennessee, and Missouri. Additionally, I have been featured in The Magazine Antiques, Metalsmith, Traditional Home, Elle Décor, Garden & Gun, Southern Living, Charleston Magazine, Charleston Weddings, Charleston Mercury, Winthrop Magazine and on Charleston Magazine TV, Lowcountry Live, and the TV show Handcrafted America. My silversmith objects have been featured on the covers of Metalsmith and Charleston Magazine. In 2012 I was honored with the Made in the South Award in the Home category from Garden & Gun magazine and in 2011 with The Eric Berg Prize for Excellence in Metal at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show. Additionally, in April 2014 Historic Charleston Foundation honored me with the Samuel Gaillard Stoney Conservation Craftsmanship Award. Finally, I collaborated with Reese Witherspoon’s Southern lifestyle company Draper James on an exclusive silver bowl in 2015. I live in Charleston, South Carolina with my incredibly supportive husband Matthew Quinn and cocker spaniel Ansel.
