There was never a question in my mind as to what I wanted to be when I grew up. I was always the one who applied makeup to my friends’ faces at slumber parties, middle school dances and then later, our high school proms. I started cosmetology school the month after I graduated high school because I simply could not wait to work in the beauty industry. I had visions of grandeur (what 18-year-old doesn’t?), but I was wise enough to know that I needed to train with the best to become the best. In my early 20’s, I moved to New York City and was fortunate enough to work alongside some of the world’s most talented makeup artists, hair stylists, fashion designers and photographers. To work within the heart and soul of where beauty and fashion begin was an awesome, inspiring, and defining experience for me.
This experience helped me develop my eye for clean, classic, timeless beauty with an edge. My French-Canadian heritage didn’t hurt either. Because French is my first language, I was able to easily travel back and forth to Paris to work on photo shoots with popular actors and musicians, pretty up top models for fashion shows and most importantly, work with some of industry’s best and brightest talents.
But the reality is, once you take away all the glitz and glamour, every model and every actor is just a human being, like you and me. And all of us have a unique beauty that we can call our own. My goal as a makeup artist has always been to make the woman I am working on feel happy, empowered and pretty. I want her to feel like herself, but the best, most head-turning version of herself she can be. Simply put, I want her to have the confidence that she looks good, and put a little strut in her step. Nothing makes me happier than when a client says, “This is the best thing I’ve ever done for myself,” or “I’ve never looked prettier”.
