Chris Binion grew up in Texas. He discovered art at the age of 9 when his mother enrolled him in a summer oil painting class. Exhilarated by the smell of turpentine and linseed oil, with a newly discovered penchant for art, he accompanied his mother on an expedition to discover everything arty in West Texas. He attended Texas Tech University where he received a BA in English Literature and a MA in Park Administration/Landscape Architecture. He then moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma to experiment with pottery and fell in love with painting still lifes in watercolor. With no formal art school training, he adapted his own distinct style while exploring techniques and subjects of his own choosing. Binion’s inspirations include everything from the old masters to his contemporaries, and he often uses objects from his personal collection as focal points of his work. Binion works in a variety of mediums including oil, watercolor, and collaborative sculpture. Binion’s paintings have been exhibited in a number of Idaho galleries and can be found in important private and corporate collections throughout the United States. In 1997 he was awarded a Fellowship for Excellence in the Arts from the Idaho Commission on the Arts. Binion has been featured in several publications such as The Idaho Statesman, The Times-News, Boise Weekly, and Idaho Business Review. In 2007 Binion was commissioned to design the Holy Cross Chapel by Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center. He was a co-founder of the artist collective Enso Artspace. He currently exhibits in Boise, Idaho where he lives.
