Bruce Pittenger
Bruce is one of Soulfoot’s co-founding members, who along with Joyce Sampson formed the group in 2015. He moved to the Salinas/Monterey area from Fremont, CA in 1972.Soulfoot In 1971 Bruce received his first electric guitar as a birthday present from his parents. While attending high school he worked for a local Salinas music store after school helping deliver pianos and organs earning enough money to purchase his first acoustic guitar. The music store hosted after hour jams where he became familiar with most of the local musicians in the area. “It was a very inspiring time in my life.” Bruce began to teach himself to play guitar. “My early interest in music really began in San Diego, CA from the early to late 60’s. My grandmother had given us an early 1920’s Wurlitzer mandolin. “I would play melodies from hit songs such as Sam and the Sham’s “Little Red Riding Hood”, “a song that is still a favorite of mine!” He owns the mandolin and plays that song to this day! “In my neighborhood in San Diego, CA we had several garage bands that I would watch as they covered the Beatles, the Stone’s and various other hit makers of the day. Upon moving back to Fremont the influences continued, which is where I really began to get the urge to play guitar.”
Bruce’s early influences on guitar were from groups such as, Ten Years After, Humble Pie, Deep Purple, Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Savoy Brown, Fog Hat and Neil Young. In the mid and late seventies, groups and artists such as Peter Frampton, Fleetwood Mac, SoulfootJourney, Starship, Stevie Wonder, Carol King and many more to numerous to mention took hold of him. In his musical journey he also found many influences in jazz, blues, pop and country music. Bruce has played both guitar and bass in local club bands for the last 47 years. Groups such as “Bypass” with Ken Boutelle of “Soul Shake” on vocals, “Red Eye Express” with David Ford, Valerie Stallcup and Jim Fegan, “Outeredge” with Charles Emlay, Scott Collier, “Wedge of the Edge” with Anthony Pescatore of Done Deal, “Full House Band” with Stan and Carol Costa, “City Magic” with Don Pendergrass, Roger Eddy, Ronnie Parker, Debbie Lowe and Joe Wedlake, “Airwaves” with Jeff Wasson, Jim Ballentine, Billy Powser and Scott Collier, “The Tangled Roots” with Jon Gorman and Bald Head Fred Rautmann and local favorites, “The Money Band” as a substitute guitarist.
A three year tenure on bass guitar with “Outeredge” turned into twenty years on the bass guitar before returning to his main instrument on guitar, playing solo acoustic shows around the Monterey and Salinas areas and now with the group “Soulfoot” as lead and rhythm guitarist. Bruce is an avid fan of the Gibson Les Paul and Fender Stratocaster. He uses custom hand built amplifiers such as Event Horizon and Divided by 13. ”I get so many compliments from other guitarists about my sound and the equipment that I currently use! It all starts with my stage sound” Soulfoot has a great line up with Joyce Sampson on bass and vocals, Bruce Pittenger on lead and rhythm guitar and vocals, BobSoulfoot Radel on drums and vocals and James Avena on lead vocals. “its exciting to be playing guitar with these professionals and I’m loving every minute of it!”
Joyce Sampson
Joyce Sampson is a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist who has been playing music since she was six years old when she started playing guitar, but soon gave that up and began an eleven-year period of study on classical piano. She played saxophone in high school. Her earliest musical influences were her father, an excellent multi-instrumentalist and vocalist who played country-western and bluegrass, and early rock n roll. In her early 20s, she returned to electric guitar playing in an original, blues-rock band called “Elmore Wouldn’t.” It was not long before she switched to bass, her main instrument, and she has played in numerous original bands and a few cover bands. She has toured extensively on the US East Coast, and in Europe and Asia with cover and original rock and pop bands. She is also a songwriter who is working on a solo album that explores her musical roots in blues, rock, country, and funk.

He came to California as a member of the U.S. Army at Fort Ord on the Monterey Peninsula in 1983 as a computer operations specialist. Bob took up the drums at a very early age. He was introduced to the instrument at the young age of six years when he received a plastic snare drum as a Christmas gift. From there, at age 12, Bob acquired a Pearl drum kit from his older cousin, who was a big influence on him and is currently a professional drummer based in Nashville. Since that first set of drums, he has owned and played a set of Slingerland, Ludwig and now performs on Tama drums.
Bob has many influences which include the likes of Rush, Led Zeppelin, Scorpions, Van Halen and AC/DC. Don’t be fooled, Bob’s influences are much deeper than his penchant for classic rock. While honing his earliest chops, Bob cut his teeth tapping out disco beats to get the basics down and is well versed in R&B, blues, swing and jazz, and along with guitarist Bruce Pittenger played christian contemporary music, which is where Bob and Bruce first met in 1994. Bob and Bruce also formed a band in 1998 with local Carmel Magazine publisher Steve Snider. Bruce played the bass guitar while Steve handled the guitar duties playing music from, Rush, Jeff Beck, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Stevie Ray Vaughan!
Since coming to the Monterey Peninsula, Bob has performed with groups such as, Tokyo Rose, Blind Curve, Cringetone and Trakhead. Trakhead was a band based in New York.Soulfoot Tokyo Rose played throughout California at venues such as, The Whiskey a Go Go in Hollywood, The Stone in Palo Alto, Mahubay Gardens and the Chi Chi Club in San Francisco, along with numerous other venues. Tokyo Rose rehearsed at the old Stilwell Hall in Marina, CA. Having Bob on the drums has solidified Soulfoot’s rhythm section and is helping the band to expand an already hit packed playlist of rock and roll, blues, country rock, alternative and most genres of popular rock and roll along with our own original writings and recordings. Soulfoot looks forward to sharing the stage with Bob. It’s going to be an exciting year!
