Musicianship and an instinctive musicality have established a frequent place for Kansas City-native Joshua Lawlor on the oratorio and recital stages. He has sung with many of the city’s most respected concert organizations and consistently delivers sincere solo performances as our flourishing arts community explores fresh repertoire, both ancient and modern. Concert performances include Brahms’ German Requiem, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Fauré Requiem, Ernst Bloch’s stirring setting of the Jewish service Avodath Hakodesh, Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs and Serenade to Music, as well as many other works from the common oratorio repertoire. Strong musical skill has also allowed for the breadth of modern music in Mr. Lawlor’s repertoire. He has premiered roles in new works including six operas and a number of song-cycles and sang the Midwest premiere of well-known local composer Mark Hayes’ Requiem.
Mr. Lawlor completed his Masters in Voice Performance at KU and holds a music performance degree from William Jewell College, though he also spent a term studying music history and singing choral music at Oxford University. His young studio of voice students continues to gain attention for fine singing and strong preparation; those wishing to pursue a career in music have gained entrance to some of the country’s most prestigious conservatories.
