Sweetshells was born in Diego martin, Trinidad & Tobago on October 16th. ) She is a Trinidadian born recording artist, writer. As a child, she was always singing for her other siblings, family and friends.
Her first performance was at the age of seven (7) for the Neal and Massy Motors Company Family Day.
She decided then that someday her dream of being a singer would be realized. While attending Mucurapo Girls R. C. School (Primary) several shows were held at the St James Library of which she participated on behalf of her school. Her desire to sing inspired her to the point where she entered several talent shows such as Twelve and under, Teen Talent and Scouting for talent. Most of the songs she sang were super hits by Whitney Houston who was her super Icon. In her secondary years from 1986 to 1991 at Diego Martin Secondary School she had the urge to write her own material which covered various genres. She wrote her own renditions of calypso which won her the calypso Queen title for three consecutive years at the school. Winning this title really inspired her to continue writing and composing her own songs. She told all her friends and family as a teenager her name was “sweet shells” and so this name stuck with her till now. Additionally she sang with choirs and various ensembles as a youth such as Youth Pulse group which was run by Sterling Gittens. Sweetshells also did solo stints for various functions and events throughout Trinidad and in the USA. As an adult she continued singing while attending Teachers college in Trinidad by joining the teacher’s choir. Her first experience with singing with a Soca band was as a background vocalist for Massive Chandelier. For many years she also was heavily involved with the Trinidad Parang season as she was also a member of “The Flores De San Jose” a well know singing group run by Sharlene Flores for several years. Even though Sweetshells is a highly qualified teacher with a BA and MA …she says it’s a talent that God has given to her and she intends to use that talent that she has been blessed with even though she is a teacher. Every opportunity she gets to sing she will sing she says.
In 2005 she released the song “Get on the Caravan” in Brooklyn produced by J.W. Records of Brooklyn, the song got airplay in New York but as a new Artiste and giving it such a late release in Trinidad February 2006 did not do the song justice in Trinidad. So she decided to re-release the song in Trinidad in 2012. 2012 season she released three songs: Fun in the Sun, Get on the Caravan and De Greatest Show which were well received at all the events she performed at. She said in 2011 she was really thankful to Fay-Ann Lyons- Alvarez who allowed her a spotlight with her for the event Fight the Fat in Trincity Mall on November 24th 2011. This further lead to her performing with Fay-Ann Lyons- Alvarez at her concert in Couva and The first Mobile Concert series. For the 2012 Carnival season she performed at many events such as the NCC Carnival Launch.
Her determination to bring appealing music to her friends, family and fans is her true focus. She has been cited as bubbly, beautiful and ambitious. Sweet shells lights up the room with the gleam in her eyes soon as she starts to sing.
