Grace Kahl
Praised for her “crystalline voice and flawless intonation” (Cincinnati Enquirer), soprano Grace Kahl is an artist quickly emerging on the opera and concert stages. She recently completed her Artist’s Diploma at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where she performed as Ilia (Idomeneo), Sofia (Il Signor Bruschino), Valencienne (The Merry Widow), and Despina (Così fan tutte). Grace was a member of the Apprentice Artist program at Des Moines Metro Opera in both 2017 and 2018 where she performed the roles of Mrs. Anderssen (A Little Night Music), Laurie Moss (The Tender Land), and The Kitchen Boy (Rusalka). Other recent roles include The Rose (The Little Prince) at Utah Opera, Nannetta (Falstaff) at Intermountain Opera Bozeman, and Pamina (Die Zauberflöte) at CoOPERAtive Opera.
Dedicated to performing new music, Grace sang the role of Lucy in the world premiere of Austin Jaquith’s Dracula:Bloodlines in conjunction with Dayton Ballet and Dayton Opera. She also premiered the role of Juanita in Bruce Saylor’s The Image Maker at Queens College. Grace has had the unique opportunity to work with several American composers, most notably appearing on a concert featuring Tom Cipullo’s works with the composer in residence. Continuing her work on 21st century music, Grace looks forward to covering the role of Lyra in the world premiere of Poul Ruders’ The Thirteenth Child at Santa Fe Opera in 2019. Equally comfortable on the concert stage, Grace has been engaged as a soloist in Carmina Burana with Akron Symphony where she “was rapturous in her solos, especially when she floated up to a stratospheric note in ‘Dulcissime’” (Cleveland Classical).
Other concert highlights include Messiah (Utah Symphony), Faure Requiem (Piccolo Spoleto Festival), Bach Stabat Mater (Cincinnati Bach Festival), and Monteverdi Vespers (CCM Philharmonia). Grace was the first prize winner of the 2017 American International Czech and Slovak Voice Competition, with a distinction for best interpretation of a French work. Recently she was named a regional finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Grace was also awarded the 2nd prize in the 2018 Palm Springs Opera Competition, and 3rd prize in the Artist Division of the 2019 Carolyn Bailey and Dominick Argento Vocal Competition. Currently Grace is a member of the Utah Opera Resident Artist Program for their 2018/2019 season where she was featured in Die Zauberflöte, The Little Prince and Candide. She will be returning for their 2019/2020 season in La Traviata, The Barber of Seville, and Thais. Grace holds a Bachelor’s of Music from CUNY Queens College and a Masters of Music/Artist Diploma from Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
