Kara Morgan

Kara Morgan is a mezzo soprano pursuing her passion to make a name for herself in the opera house and on the concert stage. Since her first experience singing as part of Minnesota Opera’s youth program Project Opera!, Kara has dedicated herself to studying the world, languages, and characters of opera. Most recently heard with the Gilbert and Sullivan Very Light Opera Company in their production of Princess Ida, Kara “stunned” critics for “sublime singing and solid comedic acting” in her portrayal of Melissa (phenoMNal twin cities). Previously, Kara joined the Santa Fe Opera as an Apprentice Artist and was heard in the 2017 productions of Lucia di Lammermoor, Die Fledermaus, and The Golden Cockerel. Prior to Santa Fe, Kara was a member of the vocal studio belonging to The College Light Opera Company, where she first fell in love with operetta singing Mad Margaret in Ruddigore.
As a student, Kara enjoyed a wealth of onstage opportunities and realized roles such as Ottone (Agrippina), Angelina (La Cenerentola), Mrs. Soames (Our Town), Katisha (The Mikado), Dritte Dame (Die Zauberflöte), and the Old Prioress (Dialogues of the Carmelites) – the last of which earned her acclaim for “[bringing] down the house in the first act” (Boston Music Intelligencer). Her time at the New England Conservatory provided Kara with incredible experiences, including participation in educational outreach in elementary schools around the Boston area, singing a lead role in a workshop production of Naga, a new opera written by Scott Wheeler, and singing Waltraute as part of “An Evening in Valhalla,” a 2014 salute to Wagner during which she shared the stage with Jane Eaglen and Greer Grimsley.
It would not be her only appearance in Jordan Hall – later that year, Kara was selected as one of three soloists appearing with the NEC Chamber Orchestra in an unconducted performance of Erik Satie’s Socrate. Kara quickly found a home in choral/orchestral works while attending Drake University, where she enjoyed singing with the two most selective choirs in the program. Drake’s Concert and Chamber Choirs introduced Kara to every era of classical music from Carmina Burana to Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Hodie, and their tours brought her to venues across the United States, the UK, and Ireland. Kara was a frequent soloist, most notably appearing as the rehearsal soloist for a performance of Mozart’s Coronation Mass in Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center. In the 2019 season, Kara is thrilled to join Fargo-Moorhead Opera’s Gate City Bank Young Artist Program. She is looking forward to debuting the roles of Dorabella (Così fan tutte) and Mercédès (Carmen) with performances scheduled in the spring. Kara is currently based in Minneapolis, where she studies with mezzo soprano Victoria Vargas and enjoys working on counted cross stitch, listening to NPR, perusing museums, and spending time with her family and her dog, Davos.
