Phillip Dunlap

A native of Iowa, Phillip Dunlap currently resides in St. Louis, Missouri where he is active as a musician and educator. He holds Bachelor of Music degree in jazz performance (piano) a Bachelor of Music degree music theory/composition and a Masters of Music in jazz performance from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. For the past 10 years, he has filled the role of Director of Education and Community Engagement for Jazz St. Louis (JSL), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the thriving of jazz in America. In addition to helping JSL operate one of the top-ten jazz clubs in America (Jazz at the Bistro), Mr. Dunlap manages their extensive portfolio of education programs and community programs, which are available to all schools, students and teachers in the greater St. Louis area. These programs include student ensembles, in-school jazz performances, artist residencies, a middle school jazz curriculum, professional development opportunities for teachers and an adopt-a-school program. His recent efforts have been focused on the creation of the Jazz Academy, an after-school jazz program for at-risk youth in the St. Louis area. As a musician, Mr. Dunlap performs and teaches throughout the United States and abroad as a sideman with various groups, in addition to his own group, the Phil Dunlap Quintet. Over the years, he has performed with musicians such as Jimmy Cobb, Terell Stafford, John Pizzarelli, Houston Person, Harold Jones, Byron Stripling, Vincent Gardner, Anat Cohen, Matt Wilson, Andre Hayward, Christine Brewer, and Jeff Hamilton. Recent performances include appearances at Jazz at the Bistro, the Saint Louis Art Museum, Powell Symphony Hall, The World Chess Hall of Fame and Museum, the US Ambassador to Thailand’s residence, the Miles Davis Jazz Festival, and the American Jazz Museum. In 2015, he was commissioned by the Saint Louis Art Museum to create a lecture/concert on jazz and mid-century modern design, which featured the music of Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, and the Modern Jazz Quartet.
Also passionate about cultural diplomacy, Phillip traveled to Afghanistan in the summer of 2009 where he was artist in residence at Kabul University’s School of Music and at the National Institute for Music. In 2013, he traveled to Guyana as a cultural envoy on behalf of the US Department of State, and is a regular faculty member of the Thailand Jazz Workshop at Rangsit University. He has twice served on the judging panel for the US Department of State’s American Music Abroad program. As someone who believes in being involved in the community, Dunlap serves as Vice President of Missouri Citizens for the Arts, helping to organize local and state wide arts-advocacy initiatives. He serves as president of the board of Growing American Youth, a youth-focued LGBTQ social support organization in St. Louis, and is a member of the executive committee of Jazz Education Abroad, an international jazz-education and cultural diplomacy organization. He also currently serves as a grants review panelist for both the Regional Arts Commission and the Missouri Arts Council. Phillip has taught courses in jazz history at the University of Missouri, St. Louis, as well as music business at Webster University and Southern Illinois University
Edwardsville. Most recently, he launched a new course called, Business in the Arts, at the University of Missouri, St. Louis, a course of his own creation. In 2011, he was named “30 under 30” by the St. Louis Business Journal and in 2015 was named by ALIVE Magazine as one of “8 People Making a Difference in STL”. In 2014, he was awarded and Artist Support Grant through the Regional Arts Commission for help with his first recording project. Phillip is a graduate of the Community Arts Education Leadership Institute, a program of the National Guild for Community Arts Education.
