An accomplished and experienced saxophonist, Paul Peacock is one of the exciting new faces on the jazz scene in Texas. He has a voice all his own with the influences of past masters such as Joe Henderson, John Coltrane, and Sonny Rollins. There is also a definite contemporary influence from Michael Brecker, David Liebman, and Chris Potter as well. His music is both fiery and subtle, engaging the listener in a variety of textures.
His performing career spans over 20 years as both a leader and sideman. He has shared the bandstand with many of the most recognizable names in jazz and popular music such as Louis Belson, Tim Hagans, Ernie Watts, Woody Witt, Jim Snidero, The O’Jays, Dennis Dotson, and Tony Campise. As a recording artist, Paul is comfortable and efficient in the studio. He has recorded in a variety of styles ranging from jazz, R&B, gospel, Latin, Classical, and funk/fusion. He maintains his own small recording label BirdBoy Music and has produced, performed, and engineered 4 albums on the label since 2008. Fluent on all saxophones, Paul has performed on every saxophone in the section as well as Classical and chamber ensembles.
Mr. Peacock holds a Bachelors degree and a Masters degree in Music from Sam Houston State University, where he served as Graduate Teaching Assistant in 2003 and conducted the SHSU Jazz Lab Band. He has won numerous performance awards including an award in the 2001 North American Saxophone Alliance Jazz Competition, IAJE Outstanding Performance Awards, Outstanding Performance Awards at SHSU, Kansas State, and Lamar University Jazz Festivals. Mr. Peacock has also appeared as a soloist on guitarist Chris Cortez’s album Awakenings, which was a finalist for a Grammy nomination in 2007, and the Texas Tech University Jazz Ensemble recording Seein’ the Light, Hearin’ the Hub-Tones, nominated for a Grammy in 1996. Recently, he has recorded and produced 4 albums with collaborator Michael Owen on his BirdBoy label with more in production for 2010 and 2011. Mr. Peacock is also working on a recording project with New York drum legend Codaryl “Cody” Moffett due out 2010.
When not busy with a constant studio teaching private performance, clinician, and recording schedule, Paul can be seen regularly performing at many of the finest jazz clubs in Houston.
