Composer-poet-teacher, Joanne Rand is releasing her 17th CD of original songs, “Just Keep Going,” with her quartet, Rand-Randles-Diggins-Dalmolen, dubbed a “supergroup.” After almost 40 years of touring with her original brand of “Psychedelic-Folk-Revival,” Rand’s vocal styling is all her own. “Magical and luxuriant, like the best brandy in the world.”(No Depression). “Joanne Rand’s voice raises your hair. Elegance and fierceness in the same deep breath.” (Gary Snyder). “Nothing short of brilliant.” -Santa Rosa PD. Born and bred in the Deep South, Rand has performed in Manhattan, L.A., Toronto, Atlanta, Seattle, Hawaii, Alaska & the Amazon. A San Francisco North Bay Area readers’ poll voted her “Best Acoustic Band.” Rand’s 2015 and 2017 releases (with the same team) made folk DJ most-played-lists nationwide (Based on 13054 airplays from 138 different DJs) and garnered rave reviews. “One of the year’s freshest, most distinctive offerings.” (Roots Music Report). “Absolutely captivating…Startling and beautiful…Leaves behind all comparisons” (No Depression). They are receiving worldwide airplay.
Rand maintains deep ties to her Southern heritage. Raised in GA, by way of Chicago, Santa Fe, Seattle, and San Francisco, she has lived in rural Northern California for over 20 years, including six formative years of wilderness homesteading. She has performed alongside such greats as Bonnie Raitt, Micky Hart, John Hartford, John Trudell, Dougie McLean. Her 2014 release was recorded and produced in Nashville by her mentor, the late, great Steve Young, “Seven Bridges Road.”
“Just Keep Going” takes inspiration from her two greatest teachers, her father, and mother, aged 95 and 93. Their tenacity and continued enthusiasm for life, against all odds, say out loud: just keep going! “If they can do it, we can do it.” Says Rand. The songs are an ebb and flow of push and soothe, the fuel and healing balm to help make sense out of the current world and life in general.” Alternately soothing, stimulating, quirky, questioning, fun, and beseeching, Rand’s nine original songs, and two traditionals, span a wide array of genres from folk, to rock, to jazz, and gospel. Rand (acoustic guitar, vocals, bass, piano) is joined by long-time collaborators, Piet Dalmolen (electric guitar), Rob Diggins (violin), Tim Randles (piano). Recorded live in the studio, and mixed by Stephen Hart (Santana, David Bowie, Bonnie Raitt), “Just Keep Going” captures the players’ collective interplay as organically as it unfolds. Hart & Rand have recorded 14 CDs together in 24 years.
