Sara Duchovnay

Praised by Opera News for “the agility with which she negotiated her beautiful upper register”, soprano Sara Duchovnay continues to garner critical acclaim for her performances across the United States. In recent seasons, Sara has performed the role Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi with Opera Delaware, Stella in A Streetcar Named Desire with Opera San Jose, Jemmy in Guillaume Tell with the Southern Illinois Music Festival, Zerlina in Don Giovanni with Opera Santa Barbara, and Rosina in Paisiello’s Il barbiere di Siviglia with West Edge Opera. Other roles in Sara’s repertoire include the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor, Musetta in La bohème, the title role in Alcina, Michäela in Carmen, Violetta in La traviata, and Juliette in Roméo et Juliette. A proponent of modern music, Sara originated the role of Dorothea in Allen Shearer’s opera Middlemarch in Spring with Composers Inc., where she was applauded by the San Francisco Chronicle for her “precision and expressive grace”. She reprised the role of Dorothea with Charlottesville Opera, and will originate the role of Helen in Shearer’s next world premiere, Howard’s End, America, in 2019. Concert experience includes Haydn’s Harmoniemesse with the Sacramento Choral Society and Orchestra; Bach’s Magnificat, Vivaldi’s Gloria, and various Mozart concert arias with the San Francisco Bach Choir; and the the world premiere of Logan Skelton’s “Letters to Santa” with Lyric Fest in Philadelphia. A native of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, Sara holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the Hartt School of Music and a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She was a previous studio artist at Opera Santa Barbara as well as an artist in residence at Opera Saratoga. Sara is also a co-owner of, a peer-to-peer marketplace and community for female opera singers, which is taking the industry by storm and fostering a supportive culture of female empowerment, entrepreneurialism, and body-acceptance within the operatic community. She and her fiancé, tenor Clay Hilley, are full-time RV dwellers, and drag their home with them from gig to gig. They have crossed the US 2.5 times since October of 2016.
