The extraordinarily varied career of James Reginald Jackson transcends more than three decades with an accoutrement of experiences under his belt. Dr. Jackson has taken the stage in many of music’s varied facets as a distinguished educator, University performance/techniques instructor, private instructor and highly sought after choral & instrumental clinician. Reggie’s hallmark expertise is his effortless ability to weave musical genres and styles artistically together demonstrating his musicianship and broad application of theory. Being a dynamic presenter, he is constantly delivering music workshops across the United States and globally, more specifically at the perennial Invitational Incirlik Gospel Music Workshop in Incirlik, Turkey. Being an advocate of the music and arts, he continues to participate at the civic and community levels by lending his skills and time to performances in local venues such as: the Decatur City Schools All-City Musical Festival, the “Concerts by the River” series for the Cities of Decatur & Madison, Alabama and as a regular performer at Bridgestreet Towncentre for the City of Madison, Alabama and continues to be a crowd favorite. In 2012, Dr. Jackson was bestowed the honor of being hailed 1st Place Winner of “ The Homegrown Talent Competition” in Huntsville, Al as part of the Panoply of Arts Festival. He works at the state level and continues membership with the Music Educator’s National Conference and the National Association of Jazz Educators.
His areas of expertise include keyboard improvisation/jazz techniques, classical piano, Hammond B-3 organ technique, world music, gospel music, and music composition/theory and music education/instruction for majors & non-majors. His broad knowledge-base has created opportunities to venture throughout the country and world as an adjudicator, clinician and consultant. Throughout Reginald’s career he has had the privilege of working with Gospel Recording Artist Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Pastor Marvin Sapp in a featured artist capacity and has been a featured performer with the Florida State Jazz Ensemble at the Orange Bowl. Reginald is a soulful saxophonist, and an accomplished performer on clarinet, piano, organ, and flute – a gifted all around “musician’s musician”. Dr. Jackson has emerged as a heavily recruited clinician, performer, consultant, and educator across the United States and abroad. Dr. Jackson’s accomplishments & awards include academic studies at Alabama A & M University, The University of Alabama (B.S.), Northwestern University (Masters) and Florida State University (Ph.D., in Music Education). Dr. Jackson currently serves as Minister of Music & Musical Director for: Moulton Heights Missionary Baptist Church, The United Pentecostal-Jubilee House of Prayer, and El Shaddai Church Ministries in Decatur, Alabama. Dr. Jackson has served as a member of the teaching faculty at the University of North Alabama and Alabama A&M University and serves as a private instructor at his own studio. He is also an integrative instructor for the Arts Council S.T.E.A.M. program for educators bridging science, technology, engineering, arts and math together, he served as a lead teacher for this professional development 3-day course developed by the Arts Council and funded by the Alabama State Department of Education. Reggie has released 10 instrumental CD’s: “Walking In My Destiny”, “If God Be For Us”, “The Spirit of Christmas”, “I’m Still Here”, “The Best Is Yet To Come”, “Songs of Love”, “Reflections of Love” , “Expressions”, “Timeless” and his most recent release “Christmas Time Is Here”. Dr. Jackson’s pedagogical background and expertise in music education has inspired a series of piano/keyboard books entitled “Teach Yourself to Play the Piano/Keyboard by Ear” Book 1, and 2, are designed for individuals interested in playing by ear using non-traditional notation. The 3rd text,” Songs for Piano”, is designed for individuals who read music and desire to use reading music to learn to play by ear.
