With a broad spectrum of study spanning 15 years on piano and keyboard performance, Mikey Guzman’s background is well versed, covering a plethora of skills relating to being a professional in today’s music industry. Rooted in classical pedagogy with an equal passion for contemporary styles, his approach is reflective of a modern pianist. His early studies under the tutelage of Richard Russo and Deborah Love displayed a worthy investment, as he received a scholarship from the Steinway Society of Central Florida in 2008 while still a junior in high school. This lead to his studies at Valencia College where he went on to receive his Associate of Arts degree in Music Performance in 2012 under the guidance of Drucilla Engel and John Olearchick in classical & jazz literature respectively.
As an educator, Mikey prides himself in combining patience and open-mindedness to benefiting each individual student’s goals and aspirations. He believes strong fundamentals are essential and is an advocator of injury-preventive techniques for students of all levels. Skill sets covered include but are not limited to: beginner/intermediate reading techniques, literature in classical & jazz styles, recital etiquette, literature in classical & jazz styles, lead sheet reading, improvisation, chord harmonization, song and chordal arrangements, and rehearsing an ensemble. As a performer, he is an active member of funk/soul outfit Holey Miss Moley, and top 40/reggae group Graig Thompson Project, where he can be seen performing across the state of Florida and beyond!
