Elizabeth Knowles

Elizabeth Knowles is a visual artist who creates paintings, sculptures and installations revealing the life force of nature emerging as visual patterns. Some are biological patterns on the cellular level of organisms. Others are geological patterns of earth’s natural landscapes. Exploring both static and dynamic relationships in nature, her use of organic shapes, vivid colors, and dimensional layering connects the vibrant qualities of landscapes and life forms, physiology and physics, death and detritus, growth and form. Knowles has been the recipient of numerous grants and residencies including: Assets for Artists program at MASS MoCA, North Adams, MA, the Puffin Foundation,Teaneck, NJ, Miami Beach Cultural Council’s Artist in Residency Program, Miami Beach, FL, The E. D. Foundation, Kearny, NJ, The Millay Colony for the Arts, Austerlitz, NY, YADDO, Saratoga Springs, NY, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Sweet Briar, VA, The Lancaster Group Award, NY, NY, Artists Space Artist Grant, NY, NY, Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation, Brooklyn, NY, Joyce Carlyle Memorial Fund, The Banff Centre, Banff, Canada, Alex Demond Fund, The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL. She received her MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and BA from Pomona College, Claremont, CA. Born and raised near St. Louis, Missouri, she currently lives and works in New York City and Norfolk, Connecticut.
