Thomas Murray
Tom Murray was born in Bryn Mawr, PA in 1940 and was raised in Gladwyne, PA. He attended public school and graduated in 1958. He went on to work in business and to attend evening engineering classes at Villanova University. After working in industry, including two years in Taiwan building sailing yachts, Tom retired and moved to Bay Saint Louis, MS in 2003. Hurricane Katrina struck Bay Saint Louis and Tom moved to Memphis, TN. A lifelong interest in painting was suddenly brought to the surface after his exposure to the Memphis art scene and its artists. Tom started to paint in June 2007 and has painted every day since. He maintains a full time studio at Marshall Arts in Memphis, TN. He is mostly self-taught with a heavy influence of the writings of Wassily Kandinsky and his fellow artists at Marshall Arts and in Memphis. His view of the world around him has been formed by the writings of Vine DeLoria Jr and other Native Peoples writings and the teachings of the Buddha. Tom has taken classes at the Memphis College of Art and Tougaloo College in Jackson, MS. He works in a variety of media, including acrylic paint and oil pastels, on both canvas and paper. He is inspired by the books that he reads and world events as he understands them. He paints what he feels. He has exhibited his work here in Memphis and in Jackson, MS in various group shows and one man shows since 2008. Tom has had one man shows in Memphis, TN at Marshall Arts, N.J. Woods Gallery and at Circuitous Succession Gallery. Tom’s work is in private collections in Alaska, California, Guam, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Washington.
