Lindsay Kate Brown
Praised for her “…lustrous, warm and deep [sound]…” American mezzo soprano, Lindsay Kate Brown, is quickly making her mark in the world of opera. Ms. Brown’s endeavors include opera roles from a range of composers, spanning from Handel to Wagner. Ms. Brown made her professional debut with Tri-Cities Opera in 2014 as Giovanna in Verdi’s Rigoletto, and has continued work with Tri- Cities, playing Marthe Schwertlein in Gounod’s Faust and Marta in Tchaikovsky’s Iolanta and covering roles in Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd and both Rossini’s L’Italiana in Algeri and Il Barbiere di Siviglia. This upcoming fall, Ms. Brown will join Houston Grand Opera as a Studio Artist. During this season, Ms. Brown will cover the roles of Mary in Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer and Paula in Catán’s Florencia en el Amazonas, among other duties. This summer, Ms. Brown will be an Apprentice Artist at Des Moines Metro Opera in Indianola, Iowa. While at DMMO, Ms. Brown will perform Ma Moss in Copland’s The Tender Land under Maestro Joshua Horsch as well as scenes from Rossini’s L’Italiana in Algeri, Verdi’s Don Carlos, and Wagner’s Die Walküre. Ms. Brown will also cover Jezibaba in Dvorak’s Rusalka under Maestro David Neely. For the past two seasons, Ms. Brown portrayed a number of roles with Shepherd School Opera of Rice University, including the extravagant and ill-tempered Cecilia March in Mark Adamo’s Little Women with Maestro David Effron, the cantankerous Zita in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi and the distraught, yet strong willed Cornelia in Handel’s Giulio Cesare, both under the baton of Maestro Richard Bado. Some of Ms. Brown’s other notable roles include La chauve-souris in Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortileges, the Mother in Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors, Ma Moss in Copland’s The Tender Land, The Duchess in Samuel Adler’s The Outcasts of Poker Flat, Third Lady in Mozart’s The Magic Flute, and Marcellina in The Marriage of Figaro. An avid concert performer, Ms. Brown has performed on the concert stage as the alto soloist in a number of oratorios and as a featured soloist. Ms. Brown has performed as the alto soloist in the works of Bach, Mozart, Mendelssohn as well as many other composers. Ms. Brown has performed in concerted works with orchestras, including Mahler’s infamous Lieder eines Fahrenden Gesellen. Ms. Brown also had the opportunity to perform in the world premiere of Santino DeAngelo’s Narcissus as Liriope in a sold-out performance in January 2016; perhaps one of her personal career highlights thus far.
A lover of art song, Ms. Brown performs the works of Mahler (Lieder eines Fahrenden Gesellen, Rückert Lieder), Wagner (Wesendonck Lieder), Elgar (Sea Pictures), and Tchaikovsky, among others. This November Ms. Brown will perform on a vocal recital with other studio members of Houston Grand Opera at the illustrious Rienzi Mansion. Ms. Brown has received a number of awards and distinctions from competitions, young artist programs, and institutions; This February, Ms. Brown
placed third in Houston Grand Opera’s Eleanor McCollum Competition, an International Competition for up and coming singers. For the past two years, Ms. Brown was the winner of the Becky and Ralph S. O’Connor Artist Diploma Fellowship for Rice University for the second year. She has also won the Concerto Competition at both of her prior institutions (Binghamton University and Mansfield University). This past summer, Ms. Brown was awarded a New Horizons Fellowship from Aspen Music Festival and School, allowing her to be an active participant in the Aspen Opera Center. Ms. Brown was twice awarded an Encouragement Award in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions; most recently in the New Orleans District in February 2018 and in the Buffalo/Toronto District in December 2015. Ms. Brown graduated in May 2018 from Rice University in Houston, TX with an Artist Diploma in Opera Performance. In 2016, Ms. Brown graduated from Binghamton University in Binghamton, NY with a degree in Opera Performance. While in Binghamton, Ms. Brown participated in a number of operas, concerts and events with the regional opera house, Tri-Cities Opera. In 2013, Ms. Brown graduated from Mansfield University of Pennsylvania in Mansfield, PA with degrees in both Music Performance and Music Education.
