Stephen Martin
Stephen Martin has established himself as a uniquely gifted, and intensely spirited saxophonist. Born in Champaign, IL and raised in St. Louis, MO, Martin began playing saxophone at age 10 and thrived in a community with a musically rich tradition, particularly in jazz. He has received numerous recognitions for his excellence in music, most recently being named a finalist for the 2018 Carinthian International Jazz Award.
Martin’s formal musical training is highlighted by having received a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance while studying under Grammy-Nominated jazz legend Bobby Watson, and world-renowned classical saxophonist Tim Timmons at the Conservatory of Music & Dance at the University of Missouri – Kansas City. He then earned a Master’s Degree in Music studying with the great saxophonist and educator Paul DeMarinis at the private fine arts school in St. Louis, MO, Webster University.
The dedication to studying the craft of the music Martin developed during those years was invaluable, leading him to discover and cultivate a uniquely personal sound characterized by an ascending energy and adventurous ideas. His inspirations have led him to explore the deeply emotional, spiritual territories of music in his original works. The sound Martin’s music achieves ranges widely from tender and inviting to thunderous and enraged. His musical approach is rooted in holding the audiences’ reaction, enrichment, and overall experience paramount. Martin’s first major statement as an artist & bandleader will be made this year as his first album is slated to be independently released in the summer. Now based in Kansas City, Martin maintains a regular performing schedule, contributing to a thriving, elite music scene as well as performing throughout the country and abroad.
