Ashley Hamilton
Ashley Hamilton is an interdisciplinary artist from Chattanooga, TN. A native of Nashville, Ashley began her art education at Nashville School of the Arts. She spent a year studying abroad at Queensland College of Art in Brisbane, Australia, where she focused mainly on printmaking and installation. She received her BFA in drawing and painting from University of Tennessee in Chattanooga.
Ashley works as an artist and curator. She was the co-founder and curator of Easy Lemon, the first artist’s residency program in Chattanooga, TN, where she hosted “happenings” of established inter-media artists from around the country. She started various curatorial projects, including a pop-up show series called “Gallery for a Night.” She has been actively involved in the art scene in her area, and was featured as a “game-changer” in Chattanooga Now’s “Changing Chattanooga” series. She helped run Apothecary Gallery throughout her undergrad as well as serving as an artist’s assistant for local artists. Additionally, she worked as the public relations and creative director for New Dischord, an interdisciplinary arts festival in Chattanooga. In 2013, Ashley was honored with the prestigious “Artists and Authors Club” scholarship from UTC. She currently is a curator at Tanner Hill Gallery. Her work has been shown both nationally and internationally. Recent exhibitions include a solo-show in Chattanooga, TN as well as various juried shows around town. International exhibitions include a group show at Circle Gallery in Brisbane, Australia. Group show highlights include a first place award at the 2013 UTC juried student exhibition.
Ashley’s work often explores issues regarding the struggle of self-identity, focusing on psychoanalytical notions such as displacement and repetition compulsion. Although trained as a painter, her work exists in an expanded field of painting, manifesting in various ways including performance, sculpture, installation, and video.
