Brian PhillipsBrian Phillips puts paint on a brush and place it down on things to make pictures. Born an Ohio Buckeye, he moved to Indianapolis for 15 years in 1995. In 2011, he moved to Austin in The Great State of Texas. It took him 40 years to finally find his place in this world. He loves Texas. he and his wife have 2 German Shepherds, 2 awesome cats and 2 ferel cats they take care of. He hopes you enjoy his work as much as he enjoys creating it. He also does commissioned pieces in case you would like something personal.
Creating art is one of his first memories. His mom always said a drawing pad and crayons were the only thing that would hold his attention. He strayed from creating art in his teens, but rediscovered it in his early 20’s and found it to be the therapeutic release he needed and it has been a constant in his life ever since. With more than 20 years experience making art, Brian has been a full time artist since 2010. He is primarily a self-taught artist: outside of high school art classesBrian Phillips and some continuing education courses, trial and error has been his method. He credits the variations in the styles of his art to his approach of independent learning by doing. He believes this open approach leads to more creativity and self discovery. When he finds the wood/objects he salvages, he tries to see the beauty in the blemishes, mistakes and years of use and abuse. It all has a story, good or bad. He has always been drawn to layers and layers of paint drips, scrapes, nail holes and repurposed items. Folk art speaks to him in that way as well. Use what’s available, just make art. He strives to make art that engages people, and hopefully brings a smile. He feels art is about inclusion, not exclusion. Share it with people, some people get it, some don’t, and that’s the beautiful thing about art. There’s something out there for everyone. Embrace that.
